Robson Green visits CFC (story below)

Robson was in NZ for the Extreme Fishing Show, filming for the series that will be aired in NZ in August this year.
Green has made a name for himself in such television programmes as Soldier Soldier, Wire in the Blood and most recently Being Human.
He has been a regular visitor to New Zealand in recent years to fish. His 10-day trip was his first to the South Island where he landed eel, blue cod and kahawai in Kaikoura, Blenheim and Nelson.

A huge part of the show is Robson heading out on his fishing trip with a mission in mind, this one being that he is planning on restoring some national pride by proving not all Englishmen are gutless prima donnas after a not so happy performance by England in the recent World Cup.  They kept a “rugby theme” flowing throughout the filming, ending their NZ visit at CFC.
Robson and his crew drove back from Kaikoura on Sunday 15th January to film at the club.
Robson donned the club strip and with a mix of CFC players was run through a series of physical drills and exercises – coach for the day Pierre Gargiulo, with varying success and displays of physical prowess. With a constant smile and an English quip ready he thoroughly enjoyed the exercise and was a true delight to all involved, and certainly felt he restored some English pride to the rugby fraternity.

After posing for some photos and meeting some keen watchers, he and his support crew partook of some great CFC hospitality, sponsors product Tui!! before heading away to resume his hectic schedule.

Richie McCaw’s Contract Announcement, May 25th 2011

An ever loyal club man, Richie asked the Club that he be able to hold his Media Release in the clubrooms to announce his signing with NZRU for the next four years.

A humble and honest lad, pulling on the Black jersey is the end all and be all for him.

In attendance at the conference for Christchurch Football Club was Club President Gerald Wilson, Club Captain Toby Giles, Mike and Lorna O'Donovan and official club photographer Tanyia Legge.

Here is a great article written by Tony Smith, The Press:

The setting for New Zealand sport's second big re-signing coup said as much about Richie McCaw's rugby values as his ball-sneak ability at the breakdown.

Where would one expect the captain of one of the world's most successful sporting teams to make such a momentous announcement?

Parliament Buildings for the ubiquitous prime ministerial photo opportunity? A swank golfing resort? The red-carpeted lobby of some five-star hotel (though there aren't many of those left in Christchurch)?

Nope. Richie McCaw – who hails from a family farm in the Hakataramea Valley but a proud Cantabrian now – opted instead for his local footy club.

The 30-year-old confirmed the greatest open secret in the rugby world – that he wants to remain a Crusader and an All Black for four more years, boys – in the Christchurch Football Club's Westminster St clubrooms in modest Mairehau.

McCaw stood, casually but confidently, behind a bar-leaner, hands jammed in his jeans pockets. Above him, test jerseys donated by Christchurch and All Blacks flanker forerunners (Jock Hobbs and Mike Brewer) adorned the memorabilia-festooned clubrooms walls, along with the giant, Golden Oldies-style shorts of a late club stalwart.

Despite 10 years as an All Black, McCaw looked so much at home you could almost picture him behind the bar, pouring himself a post-press conference pint. He even interrupted his earnest answers to questions about his contract to lament Christchurch's loss of the "Crying Towel" trophy to Linwood.

Inquisition over, McCaw needed no second bidding to join a game of touch with a clutch of Christchurch club juniors before a posse of photographers.

Richie McCaw

But why isn't Richard Hugh McCaw, at the very apogee of his career, cashing in on his fame by trousering a stratospheric salary from some cashed-up French Top 14 or English premiership club?

Racing Club Paris, Perpignan and Bath were among the sharks circling Dan Carter till he, too, chose to sling his hook with the All Blacks till 2015.

But McCaw's never been tempted by the same bait because he's always made it plain: "It doesn't really interest me. If I feel like I still want to play, I'd rather play here."

It's already evident, judging by the grins on the faces of his tyro touch team-mates, that McCaw's call to commit to the Crusaders and All Blacks, will raise spirits here after Canterbury's catastrophic seismic shifts. While the earthquake's impact never came into McCaw's thinking, he quipped: "It wouldn't have been a good signal if I decided to up and leave because of that, would it?

"I enjoy living here. There's been some tough times, but we'll get there. Things will get better here and if [me staying] is a positive thing for others to see, that's cool, too."

He's a real home boy, anyway.

Some All Blacks flee their fishbowl existence in New Zealand to seek anonymity in Europe or the United States after each annual northern hemisphere tour.

Not McCaw.

"To be honest, in the past I haven't done that, because usually when you get time off, you've been away for up to six weeks on a tour, you just want to get home."

The keen glider pilot's "escape" is go to Omarama each summer and soar through southern skies. The winds are most favourable at that time of year and "people leave you alone pretty much down there so you can do your own thing. [I'm] not one who goes and escapes anyway."

Fundraising Initiative for Christchurch Football Club

Red n Black Directory

The CFC Rugby Committee has committed to a new venture this year to develop a directory promoting the businesses and activities of all club members, parents and in general anyone with a connection to the club. The directory is intended to be set out in a similar fashion to a yellow pages (A5 size - handbook) and detail the business contact details of everyone involved in the club, e.g. accountants, builders, mechanics, plumbers, hairdressers etc etc. It is hoped this will promote the idea of using businesses with which you have or are able to develop a relationship through CFC.

It will be free for everyone to have a general listing in the directory. However we would like to ask those people who are interested in having slightly larger adverts (full page, half page etc) to advise us accordingly and we will contact you to discuss the cost of having such an advert. Selling such advertising space will allow the costs of printing to be met and allow the committee to simply provide a copy of the directory to all members and the wider CFC community for a gold coin donation. We would hope that this will become an annual directory and can simply be updated from year to year. This is a great opportunity for all CFC members and families to promote their businesses for free or very little and hopefully generate some much needed business at the moment.

In order to get everyone's details who are interested in being involved we have attached the listing document to be completed.  This can either be faxed into the Club : 3851938 or emailed to either of these emails addresses:
redandblackdirectory@gmail.com
info@christchurchpark.co.nz

The deadline for responses will be 20th May 2011. So please get on board and support this worthy venture.

Christchurch Football Club: Div One Trophy Winners Again in 2010

Monday 23rd August

What a weekend for the Christchurch Football Club.  On Saturday Div Three win their final for the second year on the trot and Div Two put up a valiant fight before going down in a close hard fought battle with New Brighton. Div, Three, Div Two party well into the night (along with our visitors from Petone), into the next morning and continue thru the Sunday.  Then the big one!  A great day dawned, the scene was set, a big crowd in at Rugby Park and Div One demolish Burnside to be crowned Grand Champions for the second year running.  Already on a high from the AB’s great win in South Africa Sunday’s don’t come much better.

A grand crowd gathered at Westminster Street.  The Burnside boys, gracious in defeat turned up to a man and the mighty Christchurch side pas piped in to a rousing oration.  The celebrations continued long and hard through the night and into the mandatory “Manic Monday”.

What a year it has been.  One as a club e should all be extremely proud of as it is we who set the standards.  Our challenge is however “BTB” : Better than Before.

Winning a final such as this is always a magnificent occasion and one worthy of great celebration but alas generally it’s also time to say good bye (not for good) to members of the group.  Last Sunday marked Brad Mooar’s last game as Div One coach and the retirement of Nick (Norge) Martin).

Welcome to the Christchurch Football Club

"Oldest New Zealand Football Club"

The Christchurch Football Club, with its home at Christchurch Park, has played the game we now know as rugby longer than any other club in New Zealand and is the second oldest in the world after Blackheath.

We have had 31 All Blacks from our club since it was founded in 1863 and is the oldest football club in New Zealand. We has produced All Blacks and contributed to winning provincial teams for over 115 years.
