Coaches Corner – Setting Your Season Up
As we move into March, it’s a great time for coaches to pause and think about the season ahead.
Ask yourself:
• What do you want to be remembered for as a coach this year?
• What is the biggest goal for your team this season?
One of the most important early tasks is your first communication with parents and families.
Parents can become your greatest supporters and advocates — or your biggest challenge — depending on how well expectations are communicated early.
Set clear standards from the beginning:
• Team values
• Behaviour expectations
• Communication channels
• Commitment levels
Once established, return to these standards regularly throughout the season.
Creating Team Identity
With older age groups, consider theming your season.
Talk with players about what inspires them and build a team identity around it — whether that’s a TV series, movie, sporting team, or shared interest. When players help create the theme, ownership naturally follows.
Past themes have included:
• Formula 1 teams
• Basketball franchises
• Movies such as Avengers: Endgame
You can have real fun linking plays, movements, or lineout calls to characters or concepts connected to the theme. It builds connection, creativity, and shared language within the squad.
