Welcome!

Welcome to the 25 March update from Christchurch Football Club, keeping you connected with everything happening in and around the club.

What an awesome weekend for the club starting with our Colts and Premier teams going up against Linwood and Marist-Albion at Tane Norton Park on Saturday where we had the pleasure of honouring Mike O’Donovan with the game of three halves. It was pleasing to see how everyone from the club were working together on Saturday, both on and off the field and the growth in the players, coaches, and the management teams week in and week out is a great testament to the positive attitude being seen so far in 2026. On Sunday we saw “Have a Go Day” here at Christchurch Park for our junior players and it was very well supported by everyone that was here. A big shout out to the Junior Committee for a day that was well organized with awesome skill drills and most of all lots of fun was had by the players!!!

As you will have seen Edward Hoang from Rollicious (our new caterer) is now moving into the club, so we ask that everyone begins to support Edward, his family, and his team by enjoying the delicious food that they provide

On Thursday the 26th of March will see another Food Truck Night happening from 4-30pm to 8-00pm and as a club we are creating initiatives like this to engage with as many people as we can so please spread the word and get down to the club & enjoy many awesome dishes!

As we all know the cost of living is a challenge for us all and even more so given the fuel increases seen over the last few weeks so we ask if you need assistance particularly around the payment of a subscription please reach out to myself, the Board or the Junior Committee to see what can be done as we don’t people missing out on playing the game that brings us so much!!

As a reminder please ensure we support our generous sponsors such as Adam from Hollands Tree Services who has just completed pruning the trees along the driveway here at the club, doing your weekly grocery shop at Pak n Save Papanui (Birthday Specials are on!!) or getting together at the Elmwood where Marty and his team will look after you – to all our sponsors we thank you for all your support

My thanks to everyone and everybody who is doing so much for our fantastic club, from back office to front office and from on the grass to the concrete as it is very much appreciated 😊

Finally, to Andy Scally and Jenay Eksteen who are getting married on Friday the 27th of March, on behalf of the club & all our members have an awesome & exciting day with family & friends and wishing you a long & wonderful life together 😊

Regards

Shu

Rugby holds a uniquely powerful place in shaping the strength of a community, particularly in places like Canterbury where the game is woven into everyday life. It is far more than a sport played on a Saturday afternoon—it becomes a meeting point for people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences, creating a shared identity that binds individuals together

At its core, rugby fosters connection. Local clubs act as social hubs where families gather, friendships are formed, and a sense of belonging is built. From junior players pulling on a jersey for the first time to senior teams representing their towns, the club environment creates continuity across generations. This shared experience strengthens community ties, giving people something to rally around, celebrate, and support

Rugby also plays a significant role in developing character and resilience. The values embedded in the game—discipline, teamwork, respect, and accountability—extend far beyond the field. Young players learn how to handle both success and adversity, while older players often step into mentoring roles, guiding the next generation. In this way, rugby becomes a vehicle for informal education, shaping individuals who contribute positively back into their communities

Equally important is the role rugby plays in building volunteerism and leadership. Behind every team is a network of coaches, managers, referees, and supporters who give their time freely. This culture of service strengthens the social fabric, encouraging people to invest in something bigger than themselves. Clubs often become pillars of their communities, supporting local events, fundraising initiatives, and providing a sense of stability and pride

Finally, rugby provides a unifying force during both good times and challenging periods. Whether celebrating a championship or coming together in times of hardship, the shared passion for the game creates a collective resilience. It reminds communities of their ability to stand together, support one another, and move forward as one

In essence, rugby does not just reflect the strength of a community—it actively builds it. Through connection, character development, service, and unity, the game continues to play a vital role in shaping communities that are not only strong, but deeply connected
