What a great week last week was with all Junior Teams having their photographs taken on Wednesday & Thursday afternoons/early evenings and I want to thank everyone that was involved in making it a fantastic couple of days – we hope all the players enjoyed getting their tee shirts and we thank our generous sponsors Pak 'n Save (Bryan & Lucy), VVV Real Estate (Stephanie and Andrew), Stufkens +Chambers Architects (Marcus), Hydraulink (Matt & Sarah) and EV City (David).

We were very fortunate to have had the opportunity to host “Scrum for Sweeney” on Friday night that saw over 220 in attendance to support Sean and his family. To all of the Nomads team members who rallied behind this awesome cause especially Andre, Kris, Corey, Steve, and Chris for your fantastic organization of this special function.

To Morne’ and Sienna serving over 220 people from behind the bar, to Edward & his team in preparing and serving the awesome buffet meal, to Allana & Katrina for helping getting the clubrooms ready, all of you were outstanding in ensuring we got everything right and as a club we are so proud of each and every one of you!!

To everyone that contributed on the night by putting so many awesome items on the raffle/auction tables, to buying raffle tickets and to bidding on auction items we are sure that Sean and his family are forever grateful for what you have done and how much was raised on the night.

On behalf of the Christchurch Football Club we wish Sean and his family all the very best in their journey over the next few months. To Jason Gunn, thank you for professionalism and humour & to Gary Endacott for being a wonderful guest speaker 😊

Then on Saturday we celebrated Jack Ruske's Blazer game and saw some great footy being played by our Junior and Senior teams followed by an awesome Red & Black night 😊

On Thursday evening of this week we will see the Axemen launch their Centurions programme that sees a significant number of club members being recognized for their contribution to the Christchurch Football Club so this will be a special night of celebration.

Finally on Saturday night we see the clubrooms go “Western” so get dressed up, come down to the club and an enjoy what will be a fantastic night and if you dare have a go on the Bucking Bull!!!

Efficiency and Effectiveness by Richard Young:

“Doing things right is not the same as doing the right things” (Peter Drucker).

Effectiveness is not about doing what we do best. It is about doing what matters most.

Efficiency is about doing something with less waste.

Looking at teams, projects, and initiatives: is it performing and is it functioning?

Can AI help us identify patterns we would otherwise miss. Challenge assumptions? Improve decisions? Expose blind spots? Help us focus attention on what matters most?

Courtesy of Belinda from Oxford Edge I attended a function hosted by XERO last week where they talked about the influence and impact of AI – calling it “accountability intelligence”!!

The organizations that gain the greatest advantage from AI won’t simply work faster. They’ll think better!

All of the above has got me seriously thinking about myself, my role at the club and what am I doing for all the members of the club and all who I interact with outside of the club. Am I focused on doing all things better at the expense of the critical few that matter the most – tough question to answer as I can’t please everyone so I will begin to review what the critical few are that will see the biggest impact achieved by myself and as a result for our wonderful club!

When Parents Live Through Their Children’s Sport: The Hidden Cost of Borrowed Success

Sport has an incredible ability to bring families together. It teaches discipline, resilience, teamwork, humility, and the value of hard work. For many parents, watching their child compete is one of life’s greatest joys. The pride of seeing them score a try, hit a milestone, overcome a challenge, or simply enjoy being part of a team is something special.

But there is a line that can be crossed — when a parent stops supporting their child’s sporting journey and begins living their own dreams, identity, or unfinished ambitions through them.

When this happens, sport can slowly shift from being a place of growth and enjoyment into a source of pressure, anxiety, and conflict.

The Impact on the Child

When children feel responsible for their parents ’emotions, several things can happen:

  • They become afraid of making mistakes.
  • They stop taking risks and trying new things.
  • They play to avoid disappointment rather than to enjoy the game.
  • They lose ownership of their sporting journey.
  • They may develop anxiety around performance.
  • They can eventually walk away from the sport they once loved

The irony is that excessive pressure often works against the very success parents hope to create.

The best athletes are not those who feel they must perform to earn approval. They are often the ones who feel secure enough to learn, fail, adapt, and grow.

The Damage Beyond the Child

The impact does not stop with the athlete.

When parents become emotionally invested in outcomes, it can affect teammates, coaches, officials, and other families.

A parent who believes their child’s success is the most important thing can unintentionally:

  • Criticise coaches who make decisions they disagree with.
  • Compare their child to teammates.
  • Create tension within teams.
  • Undermine confidence in others.
  • Turn a positive environment into one focused on winning at all costs.

Sport is a community. Every person involved — players, coaches, volunteers, officials, and families — contributes to the environment children experience.

When adults prioritise personal ambition over the collective experience, everyone loses.

The Role of the Parent

  • The greatest gift a parent can give a young athlete is perspective.
  • Your child’s sport is not your second chance.
  • It is not a reflection of your parenting ability.
  • It is not a measure of your success.
  • It is their journey.
  • Your role is to create the environment where they can discover who they are, what they enjoy, and what they are capable of becoming.
  • That means celebrating effort.
  • It means allowing them to struggle.
  • It means letting coaches coach.
  • It means understanding that development is not a straight line.

Some children will become elite athletes. Many will not. But every child can learn lessons through sport that will serve them for life.

The Question Every Parent Should Ask.

After the game, what does your child remember most?

Do they remember your encouragement?

Your smile?

Your pride?

Or do they remember looking towards the sideline, wondering whether you were disappointed?

The greatest sporting parents are not the ones who create the best performers.

They are the ones who help create confident, resilient, happy young people.

Sport is a gift. Let children own it.

Hi Families,

What a weekend! A little wind tried its best to steal the show, but with the sun out and smiles all round, rugby won the day. The energy and enthusiasm from our young players was fantastic to see — there is nothing quite like the sound of junior rugby in full swing!

Team Photo Nights

A huge thank you to everyone who came along for team photos — it was wonderful to see so many families turn out. A special shout-out to the Junior Committee for their hard work behind the scenes in making the day run so smoothly. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Looking Sharp in the New Training Tops!

Our players are looking the part in their brand new training tops — we love seeing the club colours out on the field! If you snap a great photo at training or on game day, please share it with us. We’d love to showcase our players and build a great collection of memories from the season.

Send your photos to: cfcjuniors@christchurchpark.co.nz

Two Weeks to Go!

We’re on the home stretch — just two more weeks of rugby before the holiday break. Let’s make the most of them and finish the term on a high. See you on the field!
