Agreement and Alignment Read a great article by Richard Young about the above two words and this strongly resonated with me because as a club achieving Agreement and Alignment is very much a work in progress and we have a to do in this space to ensure we grow and succeed. As Richard says in his article (his work & credit is acknowledged): - Agreement is what happens in the room
- Alignment is what happens after everyone leaves it
Most leadership teams confuse the two. That’s why so many well-run organizations drift; even when everyone leaves the meeting nodding. Nobody disagrees in a meeting. The problem wasn’t agreement. It was that people left with different interpretations of what success required. That’s the difference between agreement and alignment. - Agreement is about what people say in the room
- Alignment is about the decisions they make after they leave it, especially when pressure arrives
Pressure doesn’t create misalignment. It exposes it. It reveals whether people are acting from a shared understanding or their own interpretation That’s why alignment is one of the most important preparations for pressure. It is a discipline visible in the best systems. Instead of asking “Do we agree” ask “What decisions will each of us make when the pressure arrives” - Agreement energizes a moment
- Alignment is deeper work and energizes a system
- And only one survives contact with pressure

The season continues this weekend for teams. Adversity will not stop. It’ll happen in training and in the game and happen off the field. How to deal with this is acted for in the second part of Dealing with Adversity. |
 | Teams That Stay Together Every successful team eventually arrives at a crossroads. One path is frustration. The other is unity. When results are poor, cracks begin to appear. - People become frustrated.
- Small disagreements become large ones.
- Negativity spreads quickly.
- Excuses become common.
- This is where leadership matters most.
- Not when the team is winning comfortably.
- When confidence is low.
 |
|
The strongest teams don't pretend everything is fine. They acknowledge the challenge. They own what needs improving. They support one another. They continue to work. Because culture isn't built by celebrations. It is built by responses. |
Character Is Built Before It's Needed - One of rugby's greatest gifts is that it prepares people for life beyond the game. Very few people will remember the final score from five years ago.
- They will remember who encouraged them after a mistake.
- Who stayed positive during a losing season.
- Who helped carry the tackle bags when they weren't selected.
- Who welcomed the new player.
- Who kept turning up.
- Who never quit.
 | |
|
Those qualities don't disappear when rugby ends. They become the foundation of better parents, partners, colleagues, leaders and friends. That is why rugby matters. Not because it teaches people how to win. Because it teaches people how to respond when they don't. |
 | Fighting Through Fighting through adversity doesn't always mean making a miraculous comeback. Sometimes fighting through means simply turning up to training when motivation is low. Sometimes it means asking for help. Sometimes it means admitting you're struggling. Sometimes it means encouraging a teammate while carrying your own disappointment. |
|
Sometimes it means putting the team first when everything inside you wants to think about yourself. - Resilience isn't loud.
- Often it is quiet consistency.
- One training session.
- One recovery session.
- One difficult conversation.
- One more tackle.
- One more carry.
- One more effort.
Over time, those small choices become habits. Those habits become character. And character becomes the legacy people remember long after the boots have been put away. |
More Than a Game Every rugby season eventually ends. The trophies gather dust. he jerseys fade. The scoreboards are forgotten. What remains are the lessons. Adversity will always be part of rugby because adversity is part of life. The game cannot promise fairness. It cannot guarantee success. But it can offer something far more valuable. It can teach us that setbacks are temporary, effort is always a choice, and strength is often discovered in the moments we feel weakest. | |
|
For players and coaches alike, the greatest victory is not always lifting a trophy. Sometimes it is refusing to let difficult moments define who we become. Because in rugby, as in life, the strongest people are rarely those who never fall. They are the ones who keep getting back up—together. |
