Newsletter 14 Feb 2020

Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2020 season.

We hope everyone has had a restful and enjoyable break over Christmas / New Year and is surging ahead for the challenges of 2020.

State of Play with Rugby

The 2020 season could be another challenging year with  the  retirements of  Chris Mason, Simon Forrest and Kieran Coll (a total of 350 plus caps) and some incumbent players heading overseas to further their careers. These movements  have created opportunities for young exciting players to emerge and stamp their marks on the jersey.

2019 Coach Kieran Kite is moving forward with his development in the Women’s game and after coaching for NZ Development Women’s Team he will be destined for great things. Nick “Norge” Martin has stepped back a little to allow more time for business and family commitments and will no doubt still cast his eye over the talent from time to time. Both coaches have given numerous hours of time, effort and expertise to the club and the team over the years and it is truly appreciated by the players and club . Chris Hammett has moved onto a coaching role with the Christ College 2nd XV and will no doubt shape  those young men into fine rugby players. We thank Chris for his efforts in 2019 with the Colt Premiers.

2020 looks like an exciting year for teams, with a real focus on development and building a culture to be proud of.

I’m excited for what the year holds with some new exciting talent coming into the club, some current players ready to take on the new challenge and an exciting new “crop” of coaches ready to make their mark as well.
A group of 20 players have  trained from November 2019  and preseason was underway in the New Year with players getting put through their paces both in the gym and on the grass.

Exciting new player Hunter Wilson has travelled over from HSOB and will set the grade alight. He has a very big future, so watch this kid go!

NZ Secondary School  and NZ u 20 trialist Louie Chapman is back and chomping at the bit to get on the grass and bark out the orders.

Zac McKay is back in Red n Black and looking to get back the form that we all know is sensational .
Hugh Renton has been training the house down and will have another massive year in 2020.

Some outstanding young men will join the Red n Black this season from Secondary Schools and one notable return is Christchurch Junior player Tasipale Valavala who has returned from a year in Wellington playing rugby. Keep an eye on him as he’s destined for higher honours in Canterbury circles as well.

Div. 3 are looking strong as always and with CT (Corey Tamou) turning 40 ,  he will have a new lease on life, it has been confirmed that both Stu & Carlos Sumner have been at preseason training, so look out for these fellas to tear it up in 2020.

The Women’s squad  have come together nicely to defend their Championship and go for four in a row. 2020 will be a  massive year for the girls. There are still a few gaps  to fill so if anyone knows of some young women looking to get into the game, send them along to training and Breezy and Lee will get them up to speed.

Div. 2 needs your help. Playing numbers are  still  a struggle  so please if you are thinking of returning, or know  some mates that want a good season of rugby then get them in touch with Simon Kneebone as we are very keen to keep this team as a premier team in Men’s Div. 2.

The Club are excited about an upcoming event with a visiting team from Argentina.
La Plata are touring the country and have chosen to play against Christchurch in a preseason fixture.
Both the Colt Premier and Colts 20’s will play the best from the La Plata Argentina at the Club on March 7th 2020.
It will be an amazing event for all those involved and will be a great day of rugby. Put it in your diaries and look out for more details on the Facebook and Instagram pages.

Preseason games see the teams play Sydenham on the 14th March and a game against New Brighton with the date still to be confirmed. Unfortunately the traditional  game against  Southbridge has been cancelled due to Southbridge being unable to attend.

The season for Div. 1 starts on  March 28th and all other grades will be up and running by April 4th.
All details will be up on the Facebook and Instagram pages – so jump on and don’t miss anything.

Condolences
To the Archer family on the sad loss of Ray who died peacefully on Saturday. Ray was a passionate supporter and follower of the club. He was red and black through and through and gave plenty back to the club as a player, administrator and loyal member.

To Kathy, Brent and family, we feel your sorrow at the loss of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He made a significant contribution to the Club and we are very grateful for that.

Wanted
A person interested in rugby, particularly CFC Rugby, who can be available every Saturday of the season to attend selected Premier, Premier Reserve and Premier Colts matches and provide a written match report (s) on those matches for the weekly electronic newsletter for members.

If you think you are that person, please contact Tim Murdoch at tim.murdoch@christchurchpark.co.nz or on 021 961 782

Junior Club Corner

One of our CFC Junior Touch Teams, with Club Patron, Gerald Wilson

We are delighted to be writing our first Junior section for the 2020 season. Thanks to all of our families who continue to support our Club and make our Junior Club the best Junior Club in the whole of Christchurch!

Our 28 Junior Touch teams are all now back into the 2nd half of the summer season, with the games at MacFarlane Park & Nunweek Park starting again last week. We have over 200 kids participating as part of our Touch Teams, many of whom already play winter rugby but around 90 of them are new to the Club and joined specifically to play Touch this season.

Here’s a few pictures of the kids in action, including some very special supporters who have been on the sideline during the season cheering on our teams

We are delighted to be hosting the Top Team Challenge in conjunction with Sport Canterbury this Sunday down at the Clubrooms. We still have space for a few more teams and are working in conjunction with our CFC Netball & Senior Clubs to host this family friendly afternoon. All are welcome across the Club and teams can be registered using the following link: https://forms.gle/rrcoNQKFCt7yUAHR9

Note: All registered participants are to meet at the Clubrooms at 1pm, but the actual Top Team Challenge games will take place at Westminster Park between 1:30-3pm as our Club Fields are still closed. The Clubrooms will then host the Prizegiving and post event social get together from 3-5:30pm.
We would ask ALL families to respect and adhere to the field closure notices and ensure that they keep to the pathways provided to get to/from the Event to ensure our fields are ready and in good condition for the start of the season!

CFC JUNIOR PRIDE CAMPAIGN
That’s it for now, aside from asking all of our families to be aware of our CFC PRIDE Campaign, rolled out at the beginning of the Touch Season, late last year. These CORE Values (alongside the wider CFC Club Code of Conduct) represent how we want and expect our Junior Club families to behave. This year, our Junior Awards and recognition will focus on our junior members who actively demonstrate these values. Please support us as a Junior Committee as we continue to focus on this campaign
